Signed into law in 2003, this is the first law to help establish national standards for electronic mail. The FTC is the enforcing agency. There is a very good entry on wikipedia.org about the CAN-SPAM act.

Unfortunately this is law very difficult to enforce with many SPAMMERs in other countries, and out of reach.

Legal is Not Necessarily Ethical

There are Ethical practices that encompass a much wider scope than the prescribed law, and you are in danger of being BLACKLISTED by internet providers and/or alienating potential and current customers, clients, etc. by abusing (and sometimes by just using) business bulk emailings.
(see “black hat” vs. “white hat” in our Geek Dictionary)!

Offering a LEGITIMATE, easy to use and public email "opt-out" is highly important and required by law for business marketing emails, newsletters and similar business bulk email correspondence. We NEVER use or purchase outside email lists, and discourage our clients from doing the same.

Email lists are GOLD!
And should be treated with respect.
